Happy Geek Day!

25 May in Geek Event, Technology

Happy Geek Pride Day! Geek Pride Day became a worldwide holiday in 2006 after it was celebrated in both Spain and on the internet on May 25th. It supports the right for every person to be a nerd or a geek. There's even a Geek Pride Manifesto which included the basic rights and responsibilities of geeks!

On this day, 23 years ago, the first Star Wars movie was released and created a huge, almost cult-like following. Because of this, May 25th was chosen as it was quite a momentous day in geek history. The Spanish festivities were highlighted by 300 geeks in Madrid forming a human Pac-Man. This year, Wired Magazine even ran an article detailing the 5 Reasons To Be Proud of Geek Pride Day.

In a pre-nod to the event, even Google got involved a few days earlier. You see, Pac-Man turned 30 this year to much fanfare on May 22nd. So much so, that Google created a very popular, playable doodle. They even made their little pellet-gulper a permanent fixture for you to enjoy forever and ever. "How popular was it?" you might ask. So popular, that a software company which estimates how you spend your time online did a modest calculation based on their user base and concluded that it cost the world over 4.8 million person-hours of productivity last Friday. That's an awful lot of quarters saved!

darn, missed it

Looks like I missed it this year. As a Star Wars geek myself, I can really appreciate the day's significance & why it was chosen to be celebrated on May 25th! Hey you're a gamer right? You ever play Knights of the Old Republic or Star Wars: The Old Republic? Just wondering.
